Communication issues between students and teachers can be observed in the use of sentences that violate linguistic norms. This study aims to describe the problems of language politeness in students’ written communication with teachers on digital media through a pragmatic approach. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data sources in the form of students’ written utterances in digital media, such as WhatsApp messages. Data were collected using documentation techniques, namely reading, recording, and classifying messages relevant to the research focus. Data analysis was conducted inductively using thematic analysis techniques to identify forms of politeness and impoliteness in language use. The results show that the problems of students’ language politeness cover two main aspects, namely sentence usage and the use of spelling and punctuation. In terms of sentence usage, forms such as statements, questions, requests, and commands were found to lack adherence to politeness norms. Meanwhile, in the aspect of spelling and punctuation, errors were identified in the use of capital letters, the writing of prepositions, and inappropriate punctuation. These findings indicate that the low level of students’ language politeness is influenced by the habit of using informal language and a lack of pragmatic competence in digital communication.
