Abstract

This study was motivated by the reading literacy skills of second-grade students at UPT SPF SD Negeri Maradekaya I in Makassar, particularly in understanding the content of reading materials, identifying key information, and summarizing text content. The use of flipchart learning media—which is visual, engaging, and interactive—is expected to assist students in the reading learning process. This study aims to determine the effect of using flipchart learning media on the reading literacy skills of second-grade students at UPT SPF SD Negeri Maradekaya I in Makassar City. This study employs a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The study population consists of all second-grade students at UPT SPF SD Negeri Maradekaya I in Makassar City. The sampling technique used purposive sampling, with Class 2A as the control group and Class 2B as the experimental group, totaling 37 students. Data collection was conducted through tests, observations, and documentation. Research data were obtained through pretests and posttests, then analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics with the Independent Sample T-Test. The research results indicate that the use of flipchart learning media has a significant effect on students’ reading literacy skills. This is evident from the difference in posttest results between the experimental class, which received instruction using flipchart media, and the control class, which did not use such media. Flipchart media effectively captures students’ attention and helps them become more active in the reading learning process. The results of the hypothesis testing indicate that there is a significant effect of using flipchart learning media on the reading literacy skills of second-grade students at UPT SPF SD Negeri Maradekaya I in Makassar City. Thus, flipchart learning media can be used as an effective alternative learning medium for developing reading literacy skills in elementary school students.
