Abstract

This study aims to analyze the language skills of fourth-grade elementary students in journalistic interview texts based on video interview data. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving fourth-grade students as research participants. The primary data consisted of five video recordings of students’ journalistic interview practices, supported by learning documents and field notes. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing following an interactive analysis model. The findings reveal that students’ language skills were predominantly at a moderate level, with 60% of the videos categorized as moderate, 20% as very good, and 20% as low. The students were generally able to ask relevant questions and conduct interviews functionally; however, they encountered difficulties in speaking fluency, the use of standard vocabulary, the development of follow-up questions, and nonverbal communicative behavior. The use of video-based data proved effective in capturing students’ verbal and nonverbal language skills comprehensively. This study recommends the implementation of authentic practice-based learning and video reflection to enhance elementary students’ oral language skills.
