Abstract

Writing skills are one of the important language skills that students need to master, yet these skills remain relatively low among eighth-grade students in Class VIII B at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surabaya. This study aims to improve students’ skills in writing observational reports through the application of the Gallery Walk method. The study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in two cycles, comprising the planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects consisted of 23 students in Class VIII B. Data were collected through writing skill tests, observations of teacher and student activities, and documentation, and were then analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed an improvement in writing skills in each cycle. The percentage of students meeting learning standards increased from 35% in the pre-cycle to 52% in Cycle I and reached 87% in Cycle II. Teacher and student activities during instruction also improved, reaching the “very good” category. The implementation of the Gallery Walk method encouraged students to be more active in observing, discussing, providing feedback, and revising their written work, thereby improving the quality of their observational report texts. Thus, the Gallery Walk method proved effective in improving the observational report writing skills of eighth-grade students in Class B at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surabaya during the 2026/2027 academic year.
