PENGARUH WESTERNISASI TERHADAP KETAHANAN JATI DIRI MASYARAKAT PERBATASAN INDONESIA-MALAYSIA

Abstract

Westernization is a global phenomenon inseparable from the dynamics of cultural globalization, particularly in 1border regions characterized by high intensity of cross-border interactions. Communities along the Indonesia–Malaysia border occupy a strategic yet vulnerable position, as they are directly exposed to the influx of foreign cultures, values, and lifestyles transmitted through media, economic mobility, and transnational social relations. In this context, westernization is not merely understood as the adoption of material elements of Western culture, but also encompasses the internalization of values, mindsets, and identity orientations that may influence the resilience of local identity. This article aims to critically analyze the impact of westernization on the resilience of local identity among Indonesia–Malaysia border communities through a descriptive qualitative approach based on literature study. The analytical framework integrates cultural globalization theory, cultural imperialism theory, and social identity theory to understand the relationship between global cultural dominance and the resilience of local identity. The findings of this study are expected to enrich academic discourse on cultural resilience in border regions and provide a conceptual foundation for formulating policies to strengthen identity and national resilience in border areas.
