KRITIK SOSIAL ATAS KEMUNAFIKAN KAUM PURITAN DALAM CERPEN "YOUNG GOODMAN BROWN" KARYA NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE

Abstract

This research aims to find out the social criticism conveyed by Nathaniel Hawthorne in his short story. The objectives of this study are: 1) Knowing the social conditions of the Puritans in the 17th century; 2) Social criticism of the Puritans in the short story “Young Goodman Brown”. The researcher uses a qualitative descriptive method, which is a type of qualitative research. The short story “Young Goodman Brown is the main object of this analysis. The technique used involves repeatedly reading the entire story to understand the whole, analyzing the data, and then collecting the data to be interpreted. In the process of analysis, the researcher found several social criticisms conveyed by the author such as moral hypocrisy, alienation, distrust, and religiosity. Based on the analysis, the researcher found that social criticism of strict religious norms, intolerance of differences, and the tragic effects of mass hysteria can prevent these things from happening again in the present.
