Abstract

This study examines language errors and emotional expression in sixth-grade students’ daily journals and the relationship between them. Using a qualitative content analysis design, it analyzed 40 journal entries (approximately 1,000 words), purposively selected from 115 entries written by 23 students at a public elementary school in Maluku Province, Indonesia, over five school days. Language errors were coded into five categories (spelling, capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, and word choice), while emotional expressions were coded inductively. A total of 312 errors were identified, dominated by spelling (37.82%) and capitalization (21.79%) errors, along with 62 emotional expressions, with happiness the most frequent (41.94%). Entries containing negative or mixed emotions tended to contain more errors and less organized sentence structures, whereas entries dominated by positive emotions were more stable. The relationship is associative and not intended for generalization. Writing instruction should combine reinforcement of basic conventions with space for expression and constructive feedback.
