Abstract

This study aimed to describe the types, forms, and causal factors of code switching and code mixing in the interactions of school members at SMP Negeri 1 Seberuang, Tajau Mada Village, Seberuang District, Kapuas Hulu Regency. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data consisted of utterances containing code switching and code mixing collected through observation, audio recording, interviews, and documentation. The sources of data were students and teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Seberuang. Data analysis was conducted through transcription, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that: (1) the types of code switching consisted of internal and external code switching, while the types of code mixing included inner code mixing and outer code mixing, (2) the forms of code switching were temporary and permanent code switching, whereas the forms of code mixing appeared in the form of words, phrases, and reduplication, and (3) the factors causing code switching included speaker factors, interlocutor factors, humor creation, and prestige motives, while the factors causing code mixing were speaker limitations and the use of more popular terms. The occurrence of code switching and code mixing reflects the linguistic dynamics of a bilingual community that uses Indonesian and Dayak Suhaid languages in daily communication. The findings are expected to contribute to the development of sociolinguistic studies and support the promotion of proper Indonesian language use while preserving local languages.
