This study aims to analyze the meaning of synonyms in a news text published in the Jawa Pos newspaper entitled “The Government Returns Rp 10.6 Trillion to Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra” from the perspective of lexical semantics. Language plays an important role in mass media because it functions as a means of conveying information that must be clear, effective, and easily understood by the public. One linguistic aspect that frequently appears in news texts is the use of synonyms, namely words that have the same or nearly the same meaning but differ in nuance and contextual usage. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The data source consists of a news text analyzed using observation and note-taking techniques to identify words that have synonymous relationships. Data analysis was conducted using the semantic equivalence method by examining lexical and contextual meanings based on semantic theory. The results of the study indicate that synonyms in the news text are used to describe government actions, post-disaster conditions, governmental roles and commitments, as well as aspects of legal supervision. Words such as return, distribute, and provide share similar meanings but demonstrate differences in contextual emphasis. Likewise, the synonyms recovery, rehabilitation, and repair show distinct semantic nuances according to their functions and scope of use. These findings confirm that synonymy in news texts is not absolute and is strongly influenced by context. The use of synonyms serves not only as linguistic variation but also as a journalistic strategy to clarify meaning, emphasize messages, and enhance the effectiveness of information delivery. This study is expected to contribute to semantic studies and Indonesian language learning, particularly in the analysis of news texts.
