Abstract

This study investigates semantic changes in Indonesian youth slang emerging on TikTok, focusing on how lexical meanings shift through digital interaction. The research is motivated by the rapid linguistic innovation occurring in social media environments where teenagers actively build identity and group belonging through language use. By employing a qualitative descriptive method with a semantic approach, data were collected from popular TikTok videos containing slang lexicon with indications of meaning shifts. The findings reveal that semantic changes are predominantly realized through generalization, metaphorization, amelioration, pejoration, and specialization. The most dominant types are generalization and metaphor due to the communicative and expressive needs of speakers within digital contexts. The results indicate that social and psychological factors, combined with viral content dissemination, significantly drive semantic shifts among youth. This study contributes to understanding how TikTok facilitates linguistic innovation and accelerates diffusion, demonstrating that social media plays a central role in shaping the development of contemporary Indonesian. These findings have implications for language education, lexicography, and further semantic research in digital discourse.
